On The Message versus the NIV
I find myself unwilling to pick up on my study and commence the two essays I need to write.
I find more pleasure and joy in blogging and pursuing my business ends than study.
I pray, I give thanks every day for my blessings, yet currently the focus of my mind is on communications, not scripture.
I am mildly shocked, but unsurprised, by my ambivalence to studying scripture. I would rather read books about the Bible than the Bible itself. Perhaps it is because the language, even of the NIV, is so complex I have the sensibilities (partly) of the video generation; I spent the latter part of my teenage years engrossed in music videos.
Perhaps I should read The Message instead of the NIV. Perhaps I should start writing the essays anyway, even though I have no point of view (which has always been my position at Tabor there is soooooo much more that I don’t know than what I do know, so an informed, Masters-level, opinion is a very real stretch for me). The only times I remember having a definite ‘view’ were in 2nd year Social Psychology, which I seemed to understand without trying and always scored in the 80s for in my essays.

I have asked Christ to help me cope with many things recently, as I don’t have the strength to cope on my own.

And sorry that I’ve been gone, but as some of you know serious illness has kept me away.
I think I’m ready to start studying again, and sharing my journey.
God bless us all for His wisdom and patience with those of us who have precious little of either.
Prophetic images from today's worship
With the fearsome return of my mental health challenges, I have felt deserted by the God that supposedly loves me and never leaves me.
But two words today from two different people have impacted greatly upon me.
Jesus is standing on the cliff top; as we are buffeted about by the waves, scared that we may drown, and it's dark and we can't see where we are, Jesus is there on the cliff top shining a light and showing us a way to safety.
And from Hans: my period of disconnection is like changing gears in a car; whenever you change gears you go through neutral — depending on how good your synchromesh is will determine how long you stay in neutral before finding the next gear.
I have been overwhelmed by the care and concern shown to me by my fellows in my community. Your love blows me away and humbles me.
And it was a joy for my heart to hug Don and Debbie Crook again. I am blessed by having them in my life, for they are truly wonderful.
Youth and church
A recent brief email/discussion with Carol Rip and Ben Crook on teenagers and church has been niggling away in the back of my mind. Thus I was really interested when a business podcast I contribute to (For Immediate Release
) mentioned WELS, an evangelical Lutheran synod in the US that runs a bulletin board on youth issues
I wandered through it and thought that if you have an interest in teenagers and their relationship to the church (or not the church but to Christ), then you probably should wander through the site yourself when you have the time...
And the WELS have a fantastic website
in general, by the way -- given time and money I'd love us to emulate it.

Pentecostal Christianity in Australia
I think I finally 'get' why the Pentecostal movement is growing so rapidly in Australia at the moment.
My 14 year old son is not at all interested in 'religion', particularly in going to church. He sees it as 'boring', even the youth services, and not his idea of a good night out. He's prayed and given himself to God, but he won't attend church.
Which is a pity, as the youth pastor and assistants at our church are fantastic and really committed to the kids.
In discussion with the youth pastor about why attendances of youth are so low, we discussed boredom, reducing the amount of worship singing at youth services, and other issues.
What my son wants is something that is geared specifically to his age group -- LAN parties, slasher video nights, scatological jokes, lack of po-faced seriousness, and not having the bible or God shoved in his face.
That's when it hit me why the pentecostal movement might be growing so fast, especially the AOG
'flavour'. They hit the kids via music -- rock, loud, pumping, energetic. Indeed, it was this very same 'aggressive, counter-cultural' style that brought so many youth to faith in the 1970s via Jesus Christ Superstar
Sure, modern (Christian) rock music may be too much for many of the more senior members of the community (and let's not forget that the Australian church currently has four generations attending it, all of them looking for and demanding something of relevance to them), but some of it ain't half bad.
I've really gotten into Switchfoot
in the last 12 months (missed out on going to their concert here in Adelaide a few months ago; didn't hear about it until too late - argghh!!!) and there are no doubt loads of other bands that can appeal to young teenage boys.
At a dinner party recently someone even mentioned that a popular and really heavy band ('heavy' as in the style of 'death metal') are in fact a Christian band -- if one reads their lyrics they are apparently amazing, but you'd never guess it from the thrash style of music.
(No, I don't recall the name of the band but I'm investigating further, as I'd love my son to listen to something slightly less intimidating than Slipknot. I think it's great he listens to System of a Down
as their musical ingenuity is refreshing… and I've pointed him to 90s band Jellyfish
for similar creativity within a lighter rock genre.)
Perhaps disenfranchised 30-somethings leave the AOG for the calmer waters of, say, the CRC
'flavour' of pentecostal Christianity (our church is part of that 'flavour') once they tire of the music and the energy. But the AOG is phenomenally successful in attracting both youth and money, and if Hillsong
is any indication, that could be because of the staged progression of music -- from teen-friendly through to less-threatening 'AOR' (Adult-Oriented Rock - a hangover from the 1970s FM scene).
Now, if only some of that money could make its way to our own non-AOG church...

The OT and the ‘So What?’ Factor
What relevance does the Old Testament have to us in the 21st Century? How can the trials and tribulations of an ancient agrarian, nomadic and violent world bear any relevancy in today’s Australia?
The cultures of the ancient Near East drew their stories from an understandably similar palette. However, whilst prima facie the characters looked similar, the characters’ motivations in the Israelite stories were radically different. The God of the Israelites was a God that spoke to them and lived directly in amongst them; not housed in some Olympian idyll, but right there in amongst the tents. The God of the Israelites was a God that controlled the three biggest fears of the ancient world: the sea, the desert, and the darkness; he created the sea, he walked with them through the desert and provided manna, quail and water out of rocks, he burned as fire to light their nights. The God of the Israelites was a generous God, given to blessing his creation with abundance, fertility and security. The God of the Israelites was the only God, not one of a hierarchical pantheon, and all came from him.
In all these aspects and more, the God of the Israelites was radically different from the other gods of the ane. He was consistent in his behaviour and could not be ‘bought’ with superstitious ritual or object.
The third world setting might have changed, but the fundamental questions that the Old Testament answered for the ancient Israelites remain fundamental questions for us today:
- Who is God?
- Why is he important?
- Why do I keep ‘stuffing up’?
- Will God love me if I keep ‘stuffing up’?
- What can I do to keep God on my side?
- Why doesn’t God solve all my problems for me?
- If God loves us, why are there still wars, brutality, rape, injustice, starvation, and suffering?
- How do I know he exists?
Who is God?
God is the Creator of all livings things; he created the heavens and the earth. As such we owe him our very lives.
Why is he important?
He is important because he created us and our world. Unlike us, he is not bound by the rules of this earth; he can move events and people around like a jigsaw, so that his own divine purposes are met. He can punish us for our sins and reward us for our hearts, if he so chooses. He is not beholden to other gods, nor does he take orders from them. He is the one and only God, with absolute power to remake his creation. That he has promised us he won’t destroy his creation again—and has thus far kept his promise—is a sign of his faithfulness to us, even when we don’t deserve such love.
Why do I keep ‘stuffing up’?
We continue to ‘stuff up’ because we are fallen humans. Before we allowed Satan to tempt our egos, we had a great future mapped out for us. We had named all the animals, we had only to live in the most wondrous garden and manage and maintain these creatures. But we allowed Satan to twist our sense of perspective, to allow us the indulgence of thinking we could be as powerful as God, and we got found out and punished as a result. Having opened our minds to pride, greed, envy and conceit, the genie wouldn’t go back in the bottle and these same traits cause us to ‘stuff up’ today.
Will God love me if I keep ‘stuffing up’?
The entire Old Testament is a testimony to God’s forgiving love. Yes, he still loves us, even when we repeatedly ‘stuff up’. Sure, we get punishment meted out—and deservedly so—but we always get his mercy thrown in for free, with a seemingly endless supply of ‘Fresh Chance’ cards to prove it.
What can I do to keep God on my side?
Absolutely nothing. God’s love for us is not dependent upon our acts, but our hearts. But even someone whose heart is against God is still loved by him. It is just unfortunate that the heart’s owner will likely never know, nor feel his love.
Why doesn’t God solve all my problems for me?
The Old Testament makes clear that we are responsible for the choices we make concerning how we live out our lives. God can and does move the big pieces around, he can and does attend to the little details to smooth our paths, but we are responsible for whether we work in harmony with him or not. Therefore, the Old Testament shows a pattern of maturation: the more mature the person is, the more they incline their hearts and lives to God. But the process of maturation is not based solely on the passage of time; our wise decisions are based on our experiences, our experiences based on our failures, our failures based on our decisions. We need to fail many times, to find out what is right and wrong for ourselves, before we can accumulate enough experiences to begin making wise choices. God doesn’t want us to rely lazily on him for providence; he wants us to ‘figure it out for ourselves’ and come to love him through realising the anguish and heartache that comes from not loving him first.
If God loves us, why are there still wars, brutality, rape, injustice, starvation, and suffering?
Because of the same reason that God doesn’t solve our problems for us, he also doesn’t take away our need to collectively realise that pride, greed, envy and conceit undermine our own life happiness. It is painful for the victims, yes, but perhaps through their pain they will be able to glimpse a God that has promised them a happier, brighter future in eternity than their pained existence here on earth, and while they are here, suffering, they may be an example to someone else of how to live with dignity and grace. Or they may cause one hard heart to become softer through the witnessing of their sorrow. It may also be that God wants us to have a worthy comparison between this life and the next, or to help us make better decisions about the people with whom we share our lives here on earth.
How do I know he exists?
You don’t, at least not until you open your heart and offer him the opportunity to begin a relationship with you. He may no longer choose to come to you as a burning bush or a pillar of fire, he may choose not to send a glowing angelic vision in white, but he can still speak directly into your head. His is the voice of your conscience; he is the ‘small quiet voice within’ that sometimes answers your thoughts of anguished ‘why me?’ He is the sense of wonder and astonishment as you watch a spectacular sunrise or sunset. He is ‘the muse’ that spills words and ideas out from under your fingers as you type on a blank page. He is the shiver that runs up your spine as you listen to a piece of music. He is the shiver that runs down your spine when you are playing something—music, sport, a game—and you realise you are ‘in the zone’. He is the agony of guilt when realising that you have forgotten to say ‘thank you’ to him. He is the ecstasy that comes to you in a crowded room when he whispers in your head that, yes, he does love you. He is the tear that runs silently down your cheek as you realise that you love him too and you are so, so sorry for all of your millions of sins that you can’t stop repeating.
These questions and answers are just as valid today as they were several millennia ago. Our post-modern sensibilities would perhaps ask the same questions in different ways from our ancient agrarian, nomadic ancestors; the answers for the ancients formed their songs, and for us the song remains the same.
Why is Proverbs canonical?
At Tabor today we commenced looking at the Wisdom Literature, focusing on the books of Job and Proverbs.
I can understand why the Book of Job is in the canon—that just because we don't understand why something is happening to us doesn't mean that God is not in control of it.
Equally, the book shows that despite Job sharing the presuppositions of his friends, that righteousness will be divinely rewarded, he shows us that an encounter with God enlightens us to our tiny understanding, that an encounter with God will help us realise that there is more on heaven and earth than is dreamed of in our philosophies, Horatio.
I see that Job shows us that sometimes we have to go through intense suffering before we realise that we don't have all the answers.
The Book of Job asks us two key questions:
- Do people worship God because of what they can get out of it? (Job 1:9)
- If we accept the good stuff why do we scream 'unfair' when the bad stuff happens? Who said we were only to get the good stuff? (2:10)
Job the character shows us that an encounter with God leaves us happy and willing to throw away our questions and trust him (42:5).
But if Proverbs is worded in such a way as to be memorable, not theoretically accurate, and if the proverbs themselves are not legal guarantees from God, if they are not promises from God, then why include the Book in the Old Testament?
There was any amount of 'self-help/success' literature from other nearby cultures available to the ancients; was Proverbs included in the canon just because the Israelites wanted their own 'success' literature?
